2012 SAPMA Road trip to Melbourne Expo

In 2012 6 Club members went over to the Melbourne model expo to enter models and partake in the weekends activities. Quite a few Adelaide traders and SAPMA sponsors also made the trip over including Aeroworks, Model World and Adelaide Moulding and Casting.

The Melbourne expo as all ways was well attended by entrants, traders and the viewing public and the quality of the competition entrants was high. We all entered various categories and it was with some joy that some of us even came away with some trophies. See further down the page to see what models won. The expo trip was also a good chance to catch up with old friends and faces among the Melbourne Modelling community and swap stories and talk about the hobby.

As well as us South Aussies, entrants came from other states of Australia and even overseas, some as far away as Poland. We were fortunate to meet the Polish modellers and over several glasses of wine exchanged model photos and even T Shirts. Clean ones of course!

Their work was of such a high standard that some of us thought about hanging up the glue and knife and taking up up knitting. One of their models won best in show so it was not just us that were impressed!

As well as entering the technical judged competition we represented SAPMA and participated in the club displays. In keeping with our Water Wings group build our club display table was filled with many nautical themed aviation subjects.

Another major event of the Model expo in Melbourne is the annual model swap and sell. It's a chance for modellers to line up in the frigid Melbourne weather, and I do mean frigid, to get in first to look among the thousands of old and new kits hoping to find that rare grail kit or a bargain that just can't be beat. Many a stash grew that day I can assure you.

We all had a great time and are certainly going to mark our calendars next year for the 2013 Road Trip.
